Despite America’s historic commitment to education as a pathway to freedom and prosperity, from its early roots in family and church-based learning to the creation of a universal public school system, we’ve fallen behind in literacy over the last 50 years, leaving millions of adults without the basic reading skills needed to thrive in today’s economy—but the key to reversing this decline lies in nurturing a nation of readers, starting with our children.

To build a healthy brain, provide a nurturing environment with good nutrition, rest, play, positive relationships, and lots of words, while avoiding trauma and neglect, as neuroplasticity allows the brain to heal when given the right conditions.

Literacy is a matter of justice, as access to education and the ability to read are key to breaking cycles of inequality, giving every child the opportunity to thrive and fully participate in society.
